How to Choose a Communting Bike

There a few considerations to ponder while determining the right bike for your commute:

Road Bike, mountain bike or hybrid?

  • Your route: Road bikes are the fastest way to get from point A to point B, but the racing-style seating is not very comfortable in start and stop routes as mountain bikes and hybrids.

  • Gear: Road bikes are fine for light loads; the sturdier frames of mountain and hybrid bikes make it easy to attach all sorts of gear and packs.

  • More Uses: A road bike is perfect for the road but not useful elsewhere. A mountain bike is great for other riding surfaces. A hybrid's comfort and performance in on and off-road situations will usually only be tolerable for infrequent riders.

  • Tip: The best way to figure out the best bike for you is to test them out on your commuter route. Bike shops will allow you test-ride bikes, so try out different sizes and style to find the perfect bike for your situation.
