Staying Safe while Riding in Traffic

Commuting by bike can be enjoyable, but be sure to keep yourself safe using the following tips:

  • Give right-of-way to vehicles. Right or wrong are bigger than you.

  • Only use your rear brakes and turn slowly when going through gravel. when going through gravel.

  • Slow down and steer straight if you ride over something slick until you get through it.

  • Wear bright colors to help catch the eye of motorists and pedestrians.

  • Try using a blinking tail light at all times, even during the day.

  • Use reflectors on your bike and reflective tape or a vest with light colored apperal after dusk. Lights alone do not make you visible enough at night to traffic.

  • Buy a handlebar headlamp for riding at in the dark to be seen by oncoming traffic and help you to see where you are going.
